SEL Safe Spaces

SEl Safe SpaceLCPCS provides three social & emotional learning (SEL) safe spaces on campus: Kipuka, for elementary students; Hale Luana, for middle school students; and Hale Makena, for high school students. All three spaces are intended to provide a safe transitional space for students prior to the start of the school day, and are also open during lunch periods. In the SEL safe spaces, students can practice their learned SEL skills, relax with friends, read, play games that encourage socialization, and access a trusted adult and/or the school counselor.  The safe spaces are open from 7:00 to 7:55 am, and from noon to 12:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

Girls in Safe SpaceSafe spaces are designed to be warm and friendly, with couches, pillows, artwork, games, and white boards for creative purposes. Students are invited to give suggestions on how to improve the spaces, as student ownership is encouraged and respected. Student response has been very positive, and the safe spaces are well used.

Students using Hale Luana and Hale Makena are required to eat breakfast and/or lunch prior to entering, and are asked to check-in with the adult on duty and fill out a form regarding what SEL skills they're interested in improving. This information is then shared with teachers, so that the teachers can focus on those skills during instructional time.
